Many people have driven the long, winding Great Ocean Road to see the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge and tick them off the fuckit list. While, throngs of 'tour bus people' go there just for the selfie snaps.

But when you take the time to dip into the history of this coastline for the purpose of writing a commissioned travel story; it starts off intriguing and ends up feeling personal.

The hauntingly beautiful Twelve Apostles

Has anyone ever felt like they never knew the true history of their ancestors? And that a lot of the stories that have been passed down from generation to generation are tainted by personal misgivings or heavily doctored for the purpose of curating the image of a perfect family?

Loch Ard Gorge has many stories to tell

From the research I did on the Shipwreck Coast, in particular the shipwreck of the Loch Ard; I read varying stories of what took place between the two survivors of the wreck and I strongly suspect that there will always be a wrestle for the title of the hero.

It got me thinking about history, in particular family history, and the many versions of the 'truth' that get passed down. However innocent the intention, these stories can impact generations to come.

I promise the story is not too bone dry. Hopefully it might pique your interest in a little visit to the most treacherous coastline in Australia.
